MIKE BAGNALL is one of these people. A top photographer, he has been associated with country music for many years since 1980. As a freelance, his photography covers all aspects of the industry – festivals, club shows, hotels, radio, newspapers, magazines, DVDs, CDs, and record covers.
His photographic assignments have included work for Slim Dusty, Smoky Dawson, Marty Stuart, Terry Gordon, The Singing Kettles, Jan Kelly, John Williamson, Chad Morgan, Nev Nicholls, Stan Coster, Wayne Horsburgh, Gordon Parsons, Lee Brittan, Owen Bundle, JB Douglas, Digger Revell, Tommy Mack, Bob Purtell, Laurie Allen (Bobby & Laurie), Johnny Ashcroft, Allan Caswell, Jean Stafford, Reg Poole, Deniese Morrison, Kevin King, Bobby Silk, Ted Egan, Brian K. Kelly, Ken Kitching, Loraine Bird, Darcy LeYear, Mick Hamilton, John E Regan, Buster Noble, Glen Campbell, Brian Howard, and for bands like Saloon, Beaudesert, Barcoo, Stoney Creek, Grand Junction, John McCall Trio, and Silver Wings.
Mike has done work for record companies such as R.C.A., Selection Records, Powderworks, and has been involved with radio stations 2SER, 2KY, 2WS, and 2GB. Bagnall was also an official photographer for the monthly Music Magazine Capital News.
The highlight of his career was when Mike and Nick Erby had the exclusive photographic press coverage on Johnny Cash’s Australian tour in June 1981. Mike was commissioned for Johnny Cash Tour again in 1985, during which Mike photographed Marty Stuart for his promotional photos for him going solo on his return to the USA.
Mike Bagnall was born in Crows Nest in Sydney on February 5, 1950, and attended Marist Brothers School in North Sydney. He was 15 when he began in the photographic trade at W&F Pascoes, Milsons Point, printing black and white murals during the day and taking photos as a hobby at nights and weekends. His first professional photographic assignment was outside Pascoes, when he photographed the North Sydney Juniors football team.
Today Mike accepts assignments for promotional photos for club shows, concerts and country music festivals. In his spare time he documents regional Australian life, its unique fauna & flora, its stunning seasides and extraordinary landscapes, and its wonderful communities.
